ROBERT De Niro, Jacki Weaver, Daniel Day-Lewis and Quentin Tarantino have won Australia's version of the Oscars.

The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) International Awards were announced at a star-studded luncheon in West Hollywood, with an expletive-flowing Russell Crowe as master-of-ceremonies.

It was Silver Linings Playbook that cleaned up, including a win for best picture.

Its director David O Russell, lead actress Jennifer Lawrence and supporting actors De Niro and Weaver also won trophies.

"The Australian acting community is really terrific," De Niro, standing next to Weaver on stage, said.

"There's so many actors in Australia I really have respect for."

The wins add to the momentum Silver Linings Playbook is building ahead of the February 24 Oscars.

Lawrence, De Niro, Weaver and lead actor Bradley Cooper are all nominated for Oscars and Silver Linings Playbook is a strong tip to upset Lincoln for best picture.

Despite being an Aussie award ceremony, Lincoln's Day-Lewis won the AACTA best actor award ahead of Les Miserables' Hugh Jackman.

Tarantino won best screenplay for Django Unchained.

Lawrence was not at the ceremony, but Weaver accepted her co-star's award and let slip Lawrence was ill.

"Jen really is sick. She has pneumonia," Weaver said.

Crowe was at his feisty best, opening up the ceremony by slamming the script he was asked to read and warning about "technical issues".

When Crowe came to a point in the script that read "uniquely Australian" he took issue with it.

"Seriously, I should make the announcement that each and every one of you will be going home with your own koala," he said.

Crowe told the audience, which included super producer Harvey Weinstein, Oscar winning director Tom Hooper and other members of Hollywood's elite.

"I know that's going to excite a lot of you, but I'm bulls**tting."
