Sewage everywhere as passengers sleep on deck

Cruise ship passengers has told of the horrific condition on board the stricken cruise ship Carnival Triumph

PASSENGERS on board the Carnival Triumph have reportedly dragged their mattresses onto the ship's open deck to stay cool and avoid putrid smells.

The cruise ship was floating aimlessly about 240 kilometres off the Yucatan Peninsula since a fire erupted in the aft engine room early Sunday, knocking out the ship's propulsion system. Nobody was injured and the fire was extinguished. The ship has been operating on backup generator power since the incident and is being pulled back to port in Alabama.

It's not the first time something like this has happened on board a Carnival ship.

Carnival spokesperson Vance Gulliksen told AFP the "overall mood with guests is good under the circumstances and guests are making the most of the situation".

But that "situation" is quite dire according to some first-hand accounts.

Passengers claim sewage is sloshing around flooded rooms and hallways, there are long lines for food and the smell of this ship is overwhelming.

"It's disgusting. It's the worst thing ever," passenger Ann Barlow told CNN.

Barlow's husband Toby said there was "sewage running down the walls and floors", passengers were asked to defecate in bags and urinate in showers due to the lack of functioning toilets.

"The odour is so bad, people are getting sick and they're throwing up everywhere," Brent Nutt, whose wife is aboard the ship, said.

"The water pipes on the ship are breaking, toilets are over flowing and there's faeces on the floor."

Mr Nutt said when his wife first called him, she feared for her life.

"She was crying and all she could say was that she didn't want to die. She said the ship was leaning pretty bad over to the side and that's all she could think about was that they were all going to die.

Meanwhile, Jimmy Mowlam, 63, said his 37-year-old son Rob Mowlam, who is aboard the ship told him by phone the lack of ventilation had made it too hot to sleep inside. He said Rob and his new bride - they got married onboard on Saturday - have seen many passengers set up camp on the ocean liner's decks and in its common areas.

"He said up on deck it looks like a shanty town, with sheets, almost like tents, mattresses, anything else they can pull to sleep on,'" Mowlam, 63, said.

Mr Gulliksen said the ship now had running water and some of the toilets are now working. Conditions are improving.

"We have been told that there is running water in the cabins, albeit cold water, so guests are able to shower. Some toilets are operational in the public areas and some cabins," Mr Gulliksen said.

"There was a period last night that the toilets were down but technicians were able to get some of them back on line this morning," he said.

"We're in constant contact with the ship and have been told that overall mood with guests is good under the circumstances and guests are making the most of the situation," Mr Gulliksen said.

Carnival Cruise Lines CEO, Gerry Cahill said all guests on the current Carnival Triumph voyage will receive a full refund for the cruise, along with transportation expenses. In addition, they will receive a future cruise credit equal to the amount paid for this voyage, as well as reimbursement of all shipboard purchases during the voyage, with the exception of gift shop and casino charges.

"We're terribly sorry for the inconvenience, discomfort, and frustration our guests are feeling.

"We know they expected a fantastic vacation, and clearly that is not what they received. Our shipboard and shoreside teams are working around the clock to care for our guests and get them home safely."

"No one here from Carnival is happy about the conditions onboard the ship."

It's not the first time a Carnival cruise ship has become stranded, leading to appalling conditions. This notable example from 2010 saw travellers describe their ordeal as "like Gilligan's Island" after 4446 passengers  - including 24 Australians – were stranded after a fire broke out in the Splendor's engine room, leaving it adrift off the coast of Mexico.

"The whole bottom deck smells like rotten food, rotten milk, just like faeces," a passenger said. "Everywhere it's just disgusting."

Carnival has cancelled Triumph's next two voyages, scheduled to depart on Monday and Saturday.
