A WOMAN who stabbed her boyfriend 17 times in the head and neck is on the run after she escaped from a secure hospital in Melbourne's north.

Lee Maree Bartel, 34, was still missing after she failed to return to the Thomas Embling Hospital at Yarra Bend while on "unescorted leave" on Friday afternoon.

Police warned in a statement that Bartel was "an involuntary psychiatric patient imprisoned on serious indictable offences, and requires ongoing medication".

Bartel was committed for a nominal period of 12 1/2 years for the attempted murder of her then boyfriend Garry Thomas in October 2007.

Bartel stabbed Mr Thomas 17 times to the back of the head and neck while he slept.

She stole Mr Thomas' mobile phone and left him for dead with a punctured lung.

When police put it to her at her 2008 court appearance that she had attempted to murder her lover, she replied: "Well, it didn't work."

Bartel has a psychiatric history going back to 1999 and was diagnosed with a "schizoaffective disorder".

At her trial, a forensic psychologist found her to be suffering from "delusional thought processes" when she attacked her lover.

She was deemed unfit to stand trial due to mental impairment, and involuntarily admitted to the Thomas Embling Hospital.

Police were unable to find Bartel after searching on Friday afternoon and have released a photo of her.

She is described as Caucasian, 176cm tall, of solid build, and weighing about 105kg.

She has a distinctive tattoo of a cross on the back of her neck and was last seen wearing a black jumper, black tracksuit pants and beige ugg boots.

A patient was found dead at the Thomas Embling Hospital three months ago.

Police were investigating if another patient was responsible after the body was discovered in a room.
