More to come

12.44pm: Boston bombing victim Jeff Bauman helped the FBI identify the suspects in the Boston bombings, Bloomberg reports.

While still in intensive care, Bauman gave the FBI a description of the man he says tried to kill him.

Bauman said he looked into the man's eyes.

The information helped narrow down the search in hours of video of the attack, his brother said.

Bauman lost his legs in the attack. A picture of him being pushed in a wheelchair by a man in a cowboy hat was broadcast around the world.

12.20pm: An off-duty firefighter has told The Daily Mail he covered eight-year-old Martin Richard's body after failed CPR.

Matt Patterson said a number of people were trying to save Martin but he believes he was already dead when he arrived by his side.

Moments later he helped save another boy found legless in a pool of blood.

12.00pm: A US man has emerged as a survivor of both the Boston and Texas blasts.

Joe Berti finished the Boston Marathon seconds before the first bomb went off.

Two days later, he was in his home state of Texas when he witnessed the West Fertilizer explosion near Waco.

He escaped injury on both occasions and members of his running group and his wife were also unhurt.

''It's a miracle,'' he said in an interview with The Associated Press on Thursday.

''People keep saying, 'Don't you feel unlucky?' and I was actually the opposite - saying not only do I not feel unlucky, but I feel blessed that my wife could be 10 yards from the explosion and not have a scratch.''

11.40am:  Amid all the death and destruction, a group of four girls from a small US town has shone some light on the good side of humanity.

The girls set up a lemonade and baked goods stand near the Kennedy Library on Thursday to raise money for the family of 8-year-old Martin Richard who was killed in the Boston bombings.

''We hoped to raise $100, and so far we've raised more than $3000,'' the fundraisers told NBC.

11.16am: Downtown Los Angeles is in lockdown after a man walked into Hooters restaurant claiming to have a bomb in his backpack.

11.10am: The new video and images of the two suspects were released on the same day President Barack Obama travelled to Boston to console the city in the wake of the terrorist attack.

President Obama vowed that the Boston marathon bombers would be found and held ''accountable''.

During his visit, the President met with the Boston Athletic Association volunteers.

10.43am: Amateur detectives on social media blog Reddit have pointed out the hat worn by a second suspect in the Boston blasts looks a lot like the one pictured below.

Reddit users believe this is like the hat worn by one of the suspects in the Boston bombings. Picture: Reddit Source: Supplied

10am: Amateur sleuths on the social media blog website Reddit are being credited with determining the branding on one of the suspect's hats. They pointed out it looked very similar to a Bridgestone Golf cap.
"White hat looks like many golf hats, unable to narrow it down yet", one Reddit commentator wrote.

9.50am: CBS News correspondent John Miller reported: "They have other video, including the one Orr referenced, where they believe they actually have on tape one of the suspects in the white baseball cap putting the bomb down in front of the Starbucks at the second location. But reason they selected the pictures we're seeing here is they wanted to find the pictures that didn't have the most sinister activity but the pictures that gave people the best chance of recognizing them."

9.44am: Authorities think at least one of the baseball caps worn by the Boston bomb suspect has a Bridgestone Golf logo.

9.42am: ABC (United States) reports officials have told it that a cell phone was used to detonate at least one of the explosions. Video footage shows one of the two suspects making a call about the time of a blast.

9.40am: The FBI would not discuss the men's ethnicity. "It would be inappropriate to comment on the ethnicity of the men because it could lead people down the wrong path potentially,'' said FBI agent Greg Comcowich, a spokesman for the Boston FBI office.

9.25am: The Boston Fire Department has reported that the fire at the JFK Library shortly after the Boston Marathon bombs detonated was caused by "careless disposal of smoking material". The fire was initially feared to be part of the attack.

9.11am: USA Today reports at least 14 Boston bombing victims have had amputations.

9.08am: CNN lead presenter John King has walked into the centre of a social media storm after stating the two suspects were of Middle-Eastern appearance. Officials have so far noticeably avoided any form of ethnic description in their public statements.

9.07am: WBZ has issued a clarification, stating that the FBI has leads on possible names for the bombing suspects.

9.03am: AP reports law enforcement agencies release photos of suspects only as a last resort, when they need the public's help. Releasing photos can tip off a suspect and deny police the element of surprise. It can also trigger an avalanche of tips, forcing police to waste time chasing them down.

8.58am: The FBI is likely running views of the suspects through its facial recognition system, which includes some 13 million images of arrest mug shots, according to federal documents.
It may also be running the pictures through other state, local and foreign databases, some of which contain more than 200 million images, said Jim Albers, senior vice president at MorphoTrust USA. MorphoTrust supplies facial recognition software to the FBI and various intelligence agencies.
Facial recognition works best with a frontal image, but images taken from other angles can be manipulated with software so that they can be run through databases. The software takes a series of measurements of facial structure, such as distance between the eyes, to compile a unique profile which can then be compared, like a fingerprint, to a database.

8.55am: The Los Angeles Times says a counterterrorism official had told them that the FBI have found what they believe to be the detonation system for the bombs - a circuit board and parts from a toy remote-control vehicle.

8.45am: WBZ4 and CBS News report sources have told it that investigators have possible names for the two men seen in the surveillance videos.

8.38am: The FBI have set up a form page specifically to gather hints and tips relating to the Boston Marathon bombings. See it here.

8.28am: The investigation has probably collected about a million hours of videotape from fixed security cameras and cellphones and cameras used by spectators, said Gene Grindstaff, a scientist at Intergraph Corp., a company that makes video analysis software used by the FBI and other law enforcement agencies.

8.08am: The Boston Globe reports the battery used for at least one of the bombs may be a type made for specialty remote-controlled cars.

8.01am: The FBI website was quickly overwhelmed as a deluge of reporters and interested members of the public attempted to access the pictures and video of the Boston suspects. The service was quickly back up, before starting an intermittent series of blockages and timeouts. The service was more often available than not, however.

7.44am: FBI officials say 'Suspect #1' dropped a backpack near restaurant before Boston Marathon bombings.

THE FBI has released images of two suspects in relation to the Boston marathon bombings.

Special Agent in charge of the investigation Richard DesLauriers said the two men were considered to be "armed and extremely dangerous".

"Do not take any action on your own," he said.

"If you see these men contact law enforcement."

Both men are wearing dark clothing and are wearing baseball caps.

One is wearing a dark cap and the other a white cap.

"We know the public will play a critical role in locating these two suspects," Mr DesLauriers said.

"Somebody out there knows these individuals.

"No bit of information … is too small for us to see."

Mr DesLauriers said the suspect wearing the white cap, known as suspect two, was seen planting a device.

"At this time these are the people of interest to the FBI," he said.

7.21am: FBI have revealed they quickly identified a "person of interest" after the bombing. Over the following days they identified a second suspect.

7.10am: myFOXboston has published an image it says has been confirmed by officials as containing an image of one of the suspects. The official told FOX 25 the man in the white hat will be identified as suspect #2 at press conference soon. The picture also shows what appears to be a backpack on the ground matching the description of the bag used in the bombings.
