THE royal baby has finally arrived.

Here are 10 things you need to know about the boy, born to the Duchess and Duke of Cambridge.

1. The royal baby will be named in "due course" according to a statement released today. But if past tradition is anything to by, he'll need more than one name. Prince William has four (William Arthur Philip Louis). Historians from Generesunited.co.uk are predicting the new prince will be named Charles, George, Henry, James or Michael.

2. He weighs 8lbs 6oz or 3800 grams (3.74kg), which makes him heaviest royal baby in 100 years according to royal historians. Revealing the weight of royal babies is a relatively new phenomenon, believed to have started with the birth of Prince Charles who weighed 7lbs 8oz (3.4kg) back in 1948.

3. Oyez, oyez! This is the first birth of a royal baby to be announced on Twitter. It's hard to say if that really trumps the old-fashioned town crier, though.

4. Catherine was admitted to hospital at 5.30am yesterday (UK time) and believed to have endured an 11-hour labour. Just like one in 20 first-time mums, she was at least a week overdue. He was born at 4.24pm local time (1.24am AEST).

5. Like his grandmother, the late Princess Diana of Wales, the royal baby was born under the star sign of Cancer. Apparently this makes him likely to be kind-hearted, romantic, sensitive and a great listener. But he will also be prone to being both moody and withdrawn.

6. Once the name is revealed his parents, Catherine and William, will inform the Queen as a "courtesy". Again, this differs from the recent royal past when the monarch would have had much more of a say. For example, Queen Victoria insisted one of her grandchildren be named after husband, Albert.

7. We could be in for a long wait for the name. It took Charles and Diana a week to reveal William's name and a month for the Queen to reveal she had christened her son, Charles.

8. The royal baby's July birthday will mean he will start school just after he turns four.

9. And, being born on July 22, means he'll always share a slice of cake with Selena Gomez, Danny Glover, Oscar de la Renta and Prince Felix of Denmark.

10. British economists predict the long anticipated royal baby will inject Pound240 million ($380 million) into the UK economy. Most of that will come from souvenirs and purchases of party food and rounds of celebratory pints at the pub.
