A SYDNEY woman has been taken to hospital after an apparent electric shock from her iPhone.

A NSW Ambulance spokeswoman this morning confirmed that the woman, in her 20s, had been shocked by a phone, and was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition.

However, further investigation this afternoon by NSW Ambulance found the incident was related to a mental health issue.

The spokeswoman said paramedics had responded to a number of shocks from mobile phone chargers this year.

She said mobile phone users should keep an eye on their connections, and give appliances a vacuum when they get dusty.

The incident follows the death of a Chinese woman earlier this month, which her family says was caused by an electric shock from using her iPhone while it was charging.

NSW Ambulance attended 232 Triple Zero calls for electric shocks between January 1 and June 30 this year.

Inspector John Brotherhood said it only took a small shock to interfere with your heart.

"Basically, if the jolt moves you, if it takes your breath away or if it's at all a cause for concern, you need to get it checked out," he said.
