IN his bid to remain president, um we mean Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd is keen to show voters he's as cool as his mate Barack Obama.

Last night the PM posted a letter to his Kevin Rudd and Labor Facebook page approving a student's leave from school yesterday

"Dear Miss Hollis, Please make sure that Mason doesn't cop it because he was away for Tuesday. He was with me and his mum in Rocky. All the best, Kevin Rudd, Prime Minister," the letter said.

Mr Rudd attended a community cabinet in Rockhampton yesterday as part of his blitz along Queensland's coast.

Mr Rudd's handwritten letter was almost identical to a personal note US President Barack Obama wrote, excusing a student's absence from school, last year.

In 2009 the president also scribbled a similar note for another student.

Almost 2400 Facebook users have 'liked' the post on Mr Rudd's Facebook page, which is captioned "Approving Mason's leave from school (with no authority at all)".

There are also hundreds of comments.

"No matter what else you should be our PM cause your the only pollie with a sense of humour!!!! keep it up (sic)," posted Sam Watson.

This comes after Bob Katter lamented this would be the closest thing to an American-style presidential election Australia has ever experienced, with people effectively using their votes to directly elect Mr Rudd or Tony Abbott.

Andrew Bolt also blogged last week that Rudd's rules to ban Labor MPs from removing any Labor prime minister make Rudd more like a president than a prime minister and "bigger than his party".
