A FORMER Microsoft executive and his son were aboard a turboprop airline that crashed into two houses in East Haven, Connecticut, a family member says.

There has been "no official confirmation or positive identification" that Bill Henningsgaard and his son were on board, but there is no reason to believe that it was not the two of them, his brother, Blair Henningsgaard, told CNN.

Two homes caught fire in the crash. According to local news reports, one of the houses was vacant and the other was the home of a mother with two children.

Two children, aged one and 13, had been reported missing after the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the multi-engine propeller-driven aircraft flew out of Teterboro Airport in New Jersey and crashed as it approached the Tweed New Haven Airport at 11.25am Friday (1.25am Saturday AEST).

In a press conference Friday evening, officials said they were waiting for the National Transportation Safety Board to arrive to continue the investigation.

Two bodies can be seen inside the home but haven't been recovered because the home is unstable, East Haven Fire Chief Douglas Jackson said at a press conference Friday afternoon.

Fire that consumed both houses prevented them from searching for victims, Jackson said, and the basement in the home holding at least two victims now filled with water.

East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo said the children were in one house with their mother when the plane struck shortly before 11.30am, adding that the mother escaped.

"It's ... total devastation in the back of the home," Maturo said.

Neither the pilot's identity nor information about how many people were in the plane was immediately available.

Tweed's airport manager said the pilot had been speaking to air traffic control but did not issue any distress calls.

"All we know is that it missed the approach and continued on," said Lori Hoffman-Soares.

"There were no distress calls as far as we know,'' Fox News reports.

Firefighters found both homes engulfed in flames when they arrived.

The fuselage entered one of the homes, Malloy said.

David Esposito said he heard a loud noise and then a thump. "No engine noise, nothing," he said.

Mr Esposito said he heard a woman screaming that her children were inside the burning home.

He said he went inside with the woman but had to leave because of the fire.

Police cordoned off the area, and smoke could be seen rising from between the two houses.

Parts of the plane's wing were visible in the wreckage and a portion of the roof of one of the houses had collapsed, Fox News reports.

Tweed's airport manager, Lori Hoffman-Soares, said the pilot had been in communication with air traffic control and did not issue any distress calls.
