Witnesses say it's a miracle a young man is alive, after he plunged 15 metres through the glass ceiling of the city's Block Arcade
A MAN who plummeted more than 15 metres through the glass ceiling of Melbourne's iconic Block Arcade is no longer in a serious condition.
The 18-year-old was on the fourth floor of the Collins St building at about 3.30pm on Wednesday when he slipped and fell through the glass ceiling and onto its tiled floor.
It is believed he was part of a trio of men to make their way to the exterior of the building via its Collins St entrance.
But while he hovered above the heritage shopping arcade's highest point, he slipped in front of the two other men after attempting to climb a short distance to another ledge.
The man is understood to have fallen about 9m through the roof and a further 6m before hitting the floor of the arcade.
Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman Isabella Shaw said the man was transferred to the Royal Melbourne hospital in a serious condition.
The fall was captured on CCTV.
But a spokeswoman for the Royal Melbourne hospital this morning said that the man had improved, and is now in a stable condition.
Victoria Police spokesman Marty Beveridge said officers were probing why the males were on the roof and whether there had been any attempt or intention of vandalism as part of their climb.
The other two males involved in the incident were not injured.
