ENGLAND'S tour down under has been nothing short of disastrous but Twenty20 captain Stuart Broad is confident his squad can salvage something from the final three matches.

Whitewashed 5-0 in the Tests to hand back the Ashes and thumped 4-1 in the one-day series, the tourists' last chance of gaining some respectability starts Wednesday night at Blundstone Arena in the first of three T20s.

One of the few players who has held his own throughout the summer, Broad takes control of a squad which has a slightly understrength home outfit firmly in its sights.

England spinner Monty Panesar has lauded Australia's composure as Michael Clarke's men continued their dominance of the Ashes with a 4-1 victory in the ODI series.

Australia will be without key linchpins David Warner and Shane Watson, star all-rounder James Faulkner will miss the match with a knee injury while Mitchell Starc won't feature until at least the second clash at the MCG on Friday.

The visitors boast a power-packed top order containing No.1 batsman in the world Alex Hales, Luke Wright - who has 275 runs in the Big Bash League at a strike-rate of 151.9 - and Michael Lumb, with heavy hitters Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler to follow.

It is a batting brigade which has Broad upbeat, despite the torrid past three months.

"There's a lot of confidence in our group, certainly with our batting line-up with the power and skill we've got," Broad said.

"There's a real hunger in this group to finish this tour well. Obviously Australia have had the better of us for three months, and for the four guys who've been involved in all three squads it's been a really tough time for us.

"But we've got an opportunity in a strong team to really leave this tour with a little bit of happiness.

"England cricket's been through a tough three months, with a lot of hurt players because we've not done ourselves justice on the field.

"We are desperate to win, there is no doubt about that, but we have been desperate to win every other game and we haven't.

"We've got some unbelievable strikers in our side. If we can lay a platform with the likes of Lumb, Hales, Wright - you see how they strike a ball - and then you've got Morgan and Buttler coming in it's a pretty scary batting line-up.

"Hopefully we can let our skills do the talking."
