COCOS Island is on tsunami watch after a large 6.6 magnitude undersea earthquake struck near the islands.

The islands lie off the northwest coast of Australia. There is currently no tsunami warning for mainland Australia, Christmas Island or Indonesia.

The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre issued a warning for a Tsunami threat to the Marine Environment.

"Tsunami warning for the marine environment of Cocos Island.

"Possibility of  DANGEROUS RIPS, WAVES AND STRONG OCEAN CURRENTS commencing
from 06:30 pm (UTC+6.5hrs) Saturday and persisting for several hours.

"Evacuations from communities are not required, but people are advised to get out
of the water and move away from beaches, harbours, marinas, coastal estuaries
and rock platforms.

"Boats in harbours, marinas, estuaries or in shallow coastal water should return
to shore. Secure your boat and move away from the waterfront."

The warning advised people not to go to the coast to watch the tsunami.
