COLIN Sheppard has rejected former MasterChef contestant Tash Shan's claims she was ignored and marginalised by other competitors or that she seemed lonely in the house.

"We're all going to draw different conclusions about the experience — I very much enjoyed my time and I sincerely hope Tash will look back and think she did have a good time the vast majority of the time," he said.

"I think a lot of the time she did (enjoy herself) but like everyone you have ups and downs."

REVEALED: The biggest misake we've seen on MasterChef

But Sheppard, who was eliminated on Thursday night after he failed to transform his chocolate chilli ganache with granita into a cohesive dish, conceded MasterChef had been one of the most intense experiences of his life.

"I don't think you can ever really explain how full on it is without doing it," he said. "It's an incredibly intense period of time and I feel that I've come out of it a stronger cook and a better person."

The introduction of the "Power Apron" this week clearly riled some contestants, but not Colin who has nothing but praise for how his friend Tracy conducted herself on her power trip (both live near Angaston in the Barossa Valley).

"It pushed people and that's a good thing for the competition," he said. "I think Tracy was very fair with the way she wielded power. I don't think she was vindictive and she tried to look after Laura and myself, fellow South Australians."

Tracy had the option of saving either Colin or Laura from elimination, and he said she did the right thing by choosing the young contestant as he was old enough to look after himself.

Unfortunately, things went off the rails in round one of the elimination for the 51 year old winemaker and his teammate Renae when they broke their tortilla press with just minutes to go, forcing them to rely on store bought tostadas for their prawn and bean tostadas dish. They also made the all too common mistake of ignoring Gary and George's advice — in this instance to produce a more "finished dish" than the rustic dish they had planned.

"They give you advice but sometimes you just have to back yourself," he said. "Gary advised me not to cook chocolate pasta but … when I cooked mine he really enjoyed it."

Judging by Gary's use of the term "yuck" that was not the case this time around.

"As soon as he said that I knew we'd be cooking against each other and we're great friends so it was disappointing one of us would be going home."

As with so many eliminations this year it came down to small degrees of difference in the crucial Mexican dessert round between their dishes. Renae's Chocolate Chilli Fondant mixture was a little floury and while all of Colin's individual elements were solid, the overall dish lacked cohesion.

Colin took a big risk competing in this year's MasterChef, which filmed during vintage at his winery, Flaxman Wines. He had to rely on his wife Fiona, who'd never made wine, to get this year's grapes into the bottles.

"You only get one chance to make wine and potentially if it had gone wrong it could have cost us a year's income, but although we risked a lot it worked out in the end," he said, adding Fiona had done a "brilliant job".

And he believes it the publicity and national exposure of making it into the top ten was worth it, and will help encourage customers to visit his new winery restaurant which is expected to open later in the year.

"My profile is a lot higher now than it was and people who watch know I'm capable of making some very good food and hopefully it will bring people to our door," he said.
