THEY were never in front until it mattered.

Newcastle pulled off a remarkable upset win with skipper Kurt Gidley nailing a sideline conversion after the siren to give the Knights a courageous and unlikely 32-30 win over Melbourne.

The Storm led all night and appeared certain to leave Hunter Stadium with the two points when they led 30-20 with under three minutes left after winger Sisa Waqa's fourth try.

But the Knights, who had battled gamely all match just to stay in the hunt, produced a remarkable final couple of minutes to steal the game in dramatic fashion.

Hooker Travis Waddell gave his side a sniff when he pinched the ball off Billy Slater in a one-on-one strip near the Storm try line and dived over with two minutes left to narrow the gap to 30-26.

Then, with time almost up, the Knights were awarded a crucial penalty and with the siren sounding, launched one final raid which resulted in winger Akuila Uate diving over in the corner to level the scores.

Gidley then stepped up for the biggest conversion of his career as almost 15,000 fans held their breath.

He could not have hit it any sweeter.

Asked later where the moment sits on his career highlight's reel, Gidley said: "Yeah, right up there.

"As a goal-kicker, it's always a moment you dream of to kick a winning one after the siren.

"You do so much practice throughout the years and it's one that I'll never forget.

"At home, playing against a good team, it's a pretty emotional moment in the end.''

It was the first time the Knights were in front in the game.

Storm coach Craig Bellamy was filthy on his side's defence, claiming they should never have surrendered a 30-20 lead.

But he saved his harshest criticism for referee Ashley Klein and a second half penalty count which he claimed was 7-0 against his side and 11-3 to the home side over all.

"I'm gutted and disappointed in the way we defended,'' he said.

"And I'm really disappointed in the way the game was refereed.

"Ashley Klein obviously doesn't like the way we play our footy.

Tyrone Roberts has scored a stunning try in the Newcastle Knights' clash against the Melbourne Storm, juggling his way to a four-pointer.

"We've had him that many times this year and the penalty count hasn't even been close.

Bellamy was particularly upset at his side being penalised twice for taking Knights players in touch with Newcastle's try at the death resulting from one of them.

"With both feet on the ground, you are supposed to be able to drive them," he said.

Newcastle Knights coach Wayne Bennett and captain Kurt Gidley address the press following the Knights' win over the Melbourne Storm.

"I think that's the rule. We got two of those and I think they scored two tries off them.

"I'm not trying to blame it all on the officials but it's hard to compete when you have a 7-0 penalty count against you in one half of footy."

"That's hard to compete with."

The demoralising defeat ends a three game winning streak and leaves Melbourne's top four hopes in jeopardy.

The Newcastle Knights have pulled off a stunning comeback against the Melbourne Storm, scoring twice in the final three minutes to win 32-30.

There were ominous signs for the Knights early with Melbourne racing out to a 12-0 lead after just 11 minutes.

"At 12-0 after about 10 minutes, I didn't know where it was all going to go," he said.

"They just sorted a few things out on the field amongst themselves and got themselves back in the contest and after that, it was a tremendous game of football."

Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy and captain Cameron Smith address the press following their side's loss to the Newcastle Knights.

It was 16-10 to the Storm at halftime but whenever Melbourne threatened to kick clear in the second half, the Knights pegged them back, setting up the dramatic finish.
