Another horrible start to the Australian summer for Sam Stosur, losing in the opening round of the Brisbane International to Varvara Lepchenko.

WHEN we think of Sam Stosur we often think of one thing — her arms.

Those marvellously sculptured pythons that have been crushing tennis balls at the Australian Open for more than a decade now.

Whether you're a man or a woman, there's surely been a point over the years when you looked on jealously at Stosur's bulging biceps.

They even have their own Facebook page.

So being the caring lot we are here at news.com.au we asked her point blank the secret behind them.

What's the mystery gym technique Stosur has been hiding that can turn our pencil-like limbs into arms of steel?

Alas, there isn't one.

"To be honest, I don't pump weights with my arms," Stosur told us.

"I obviously go to the gym a fair bit and it's in my program to do a lot of strength stuff.

"But to be honest I think hitting a lot of tennis balls over my lifetime has helped me in that department. It's something maybe I'm just lucky with."

So there you go. Spend a couple hundred thousand hours hitting a tennis ball as hard as you can and you might be able to flex like Stosur.

The world No. 21 has had plenty of time for extra training after taking the latter part of last year off to rehabilitate an ongoing foot problem.

She says the injury feels tip top now and she enjoyed the extended time back in Australia catching up with friends and gaining, of all things, her scuba diving license.

"I did a course that ran over three days a few weeks ago so I'm a certified diver now," Stosur said.

"Not that I'll be going out by myself anytime soon. It was something I wanted to do."

Her number one resolution for the New Year is simply to stay healthy.

If she can do that, Stosur believes she's every chance of returning to the heights of 2010-12 when she regularly made it to the second week of grand slams.

"Obviously there's no guarantee no matter what you're doing," she said. "(But) I'd love to try and get myself back to where I was a couple of years ago."

She's hoping to get the year off to a positive start at the Australian Open, despite the added pressure that comes with playing in front of her home crowd.

Things got off to a shaky start at the Brisbane International but Stosur says she loves this part of the season.

"I do enjoy it. It's not every day you get to play a grand slam and a bunch of tournaments in your home country. I'm one of the lucky players that can so I've got to try to make the most of that," she said.

"Obviously it is difficult at times but that's all part of it and all part of the experience. Regardless of anything I'm definitely looking forward to the summer ahead."

Stosur is a USANA brand ambassador.
