Smartphone app Tinder is copping flack from users — particularly over 30s — who will be slugged with additional fees to use the dating service.

Tinder today launched a premium paid subscription version named Tinder Plus. The new service includes subscription fees that rise with your age. Meaning over 30s are penalised for swiping left and swiping right. Some commentators have labelled the move "age discrimination". Others called it "sleazy".

In the US, users under 30 will pay $9.99 a month. Older subscribers will be pay $19.99 a month.

Things get worse in the UK, where over 28s could pay four times as much as their younger dating counterparts. Under 28s will pay $A7.90 per month but over 28s will pay $A29.69, according to Business Insider.

A spokeswoman for Tinder said the decision was made because of "a combination of factors" including what other products are doing.

"Lots of products offer differentiated price tiers by age, like Spotify does for students, for example," she said.

"Tinder is no different; during our testing we've learned, not surprisingly, that younger users are just as excited about Tinder Plus, but are more budget constrained, and need a lower price to pull the trigger."

The "premium" service does offer users something regular Tinder users are not afforded, including unlimited liking capabilities. Now you can like until your heart is content. It also offers users the "Rewind" feature to go back and review a swipe if they accidentally liked a photo they didn't mean to, or vice versa.

Despite that, Tinder users took to social media to voice their objections to the changes.
