Guilty was the verdict handed to the man who killed Daniel Morcombe and met with high emotion inside the courtroom.
THIS is the letter that showed police had all but given up on finding Daniel Morcombe and his killer.
A sign of sheer exhaustion after seven fruitless years, it was a plea from officers running the biggest investigation in Queensland history for it to be taken off their hands and deemed a "cold case".

The report, obtained by The Courier-Mail, was written in January 2010 by then Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Schmidt, officer-in-charge of the Sunshine Coast CIB at that time.
He asked the Inspector of Crime Services to forward the matter to the state coroner Michael Barnes.
The letter in which detectives asked Daniel Morcombe's murder be deemed a cold case.
The CIB chief then dropped a bombshell that would have been devastating news to the Morcombe family, who had been assured their son's case remained a top police priority.
"I further recommend that this investigation be now forwarded to the Homicide Investigation Group as a cold case investigation at the first available opportunity," Sen-Sgt Schmidt wrote.
"The investigation report, as attached, is complete and best suited for handover in this current state. I respectfully submit that the entire investigation be reviewed by Homicide Investigation Group now that the matter is a complete document and that any future investigations be conducted by the HIG Cold Case Team.
"Should this eventuate, the Sunshine Coast CIB would remain responsible for the co-ordination of any coronial inquest if required by the state coroner."

After labouring over almost 18,000 job logs – each representing a piece of evidence or information – conducting more than 10,000 interviews and identifying 33 persons of interest, the 100-strong police team had struck a brick wall.
The cold case recommendation was not adopted, but came to light during the coronial inquest into Daniel Morcombe's suspected abduction and murder.
Brett Peter Cowan describes the moments when he abducted and killed Daniel Morcombe.
Daniel's parents Bruce and Denise Morcombe told The Courier-Mail they had been stunned to learn how close their son's case must have come to being shelved.
"We were shocked (by the letter)," Mr Morcombe said.
"We had no idea that police wanted it to be a cold case.
"We only found out about it during questioning at the inquest."
Decades before the disappearance of schoolboy Daniel Morcombe, his killer, Brett Peter Cowan was abducting and molesting children.
