The Block winners Simon and Shannon say they feel for the other contestants and are making plans to take their builder on a surf trip
THE auction hammer may have fallen heavily for most contestants on The Block Glasshouse, but Channel 9 are still celebrating the reality series' ratings windfall.
Nailing the biggest audience of the year for any non-sporting program — including rival Seven's juggernaut My Kitchen Rules and INXS biopic Never Tear Us Apart — the renovation show finale posted a 2014 record audience of 2.764 million viewers nationally.
In a night of cheers and tears over the mixed auction results, the audience were gripped by the highs and lows which beset this season's teams and the bittersweet ending.
Winners, Shannon and Simon Voss were popping the champagne early, after the luck of the draw — and a lack of buyer depth — saw them pocket $335,000 profit about their apartment's reserve (selling for $1.91 million).

Despite a nervous start as the first couple on the auction block, Sydney pairing Chris and Jenna Susetio banked the only other substantial profit from this year's sales — taking home $310,000 in tax-free winnings.
With money flowing, the remaining three teams would be forgiven for thinking the auction results were going to repeat the cash bonanza last series, when The Block posted record profits shared by all contestants.
While Melbourne's property market had other ideas — leaving two teams with prize money of just $10,000 for six months work — Nine and The Block's production house, Cavalier could afford to be just that, getting a monster ratings return on their investment.
The Glasshouse finale shattered the reality results for 2014, ranking it in the top 20 most-watched reality programs in Australian TV history and attracting almost one million more viewers than The Block's Fan V Faves series earlier this year.

Nine's Director of Television Michael Healy told News Corp Australia: "The Block continues to be a consistently high-rating program for Nine. This series has averaged more than 1.3 million viewers in the five mainland capitals each episode. There aren't a lot of shows that the whole family can sit down and watch together, but The Block is one of them. It's an ever evolving show and it continues to stay fresh and surprising. As we prepare to launch our tenth series early next year, The Block is showing no signs of viewer fatigue and we look forward to producing it for as long as Australians keep watching."

It also bucked the reality 'fatigue' trend which had plagued Nine's other talent series, The Voice and continues to deliver disappointing audience figures for Seven's The X Factor, which limped to just over one million viewers for Sunday night's live performances.
Not surprisingly, Nine have immediately begun casting season 10 of The Block, to be rushed to air in early 2015.
