A WOMAN has reportedly been forced to deliver her own baby in a Sydney hospital.

The woman, who was believed to have been in the maternity – rather than a birthing suite – at Blacktown Hospital gave birth alone in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

It is understood the woman, named Kristy, was forced to take painkillers from her own handbag to ease the pain of labour.

Channel 9's Amelia Ballinger has told 2GB that Kristy arrived at the hospital in labour Tuesday morning and was admitted to a birthing suite.

"They tried to send her home about lunchtime telling her she wasn't anywhere close to having a baby," she said.

"She was in a lot of pain, she didn't want to leave ... in the end they moved her up to a maternity ward, which is not where you need to be if you're going to have a baby.

"At about 2.15am the next morning, entirely on her own, she's delivered her own baby."

Kristy's family and a friend were reportedly told to leave the hospital about 11pm Tuesday night as visiting hours had finished.

The baby girl was reportedly born face down on the bed about 2.30am yesterday.

There were two other female patients in the room who went to Kristy's aid after calling for help.

One of the women picked up the baby and got her breathing.

It was allegedly up to 10 minutes before nursing staff arrived.

Ms Ballinger told the radio station this afternoon that Kristy was "traumatised".

"She's completely traumatised by what has happened to her," she said.

"I don't think anyone expects childbirth to be easy but this is certainly a really, really bad experience.

"It's a little girl and she's good despite everything that's happened with her arrival."

Kristy told Channel Nine that hospital staff had not been monitoring her regularly throughout her 18-hour ordeal and that they had not given her adequate pain relief.

Ms Ballinger said the nurses' station was only 20 steps from Kristy's bed.

Opposition Health spokesman Andrew McDonald demanded answers from the NSW Government.

"It is completely unacceptable for a woman to have to give birth unattended in a NSW hospital, not to mention incredibly dangerous," he said.

The hospital told Nine News that Kristy was administered regular pain relief.

David Simmonds, Acting Director Nursing and Midwifery at Blacktown Mt Druitt Hospital told news.com.au: "We take all patient complaints seriously. In this case staff have spoken regularly with the patient, however she has not raised a complaint.

"We are looking into this matter and as with all matters, we will investigate it thoroughly.

"The birth of a new baby is an exciting time for any woman and our staff are well trained and compassionate to the needs of our patients.

"The Birthing and Maternity Unit at Blacktown-Mt Druitt Hospital is well staffed with highly trained midwives. The maternity unit had a full complement of staff at the time.

"Birth can be unpredictable and can at times come on quite quickly. Staff provided regular monitoring of the patient and offered the best possible care in the timeframe.

"Mother and baby are both healthy and doing well."
