SONY'S much hyped PlayStation 4 event was like hosting a gala wedding and not inviting the bride.

For two hours, Sony and it's game developing partners talked about the upcoming game console, highlighting it's social media features and advanced graphics capabilities.

But at the end of the two hours, not a word was spoken on two key things: how much will it cost and when will it be in store.

The only indication of when Sony will launched what it calls "an amazing place to play" was a slide at the end of the night: "coming holiday 2013"

Of all the questions Sony PlayStation fans wanted answered, Andrew House, president and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, started with the easy one: the new games console will be called PlayStation 4.

Leaked photos of the new controller proved accurate, with the "DualShock 4 having a light for player identification and, the most important addition, a share button.

"Today marks a moment of truth," House said.

"While we once changed the gaming landscape, now we can see how it's changing us, from mobility, to multi-format play to greater community engagement as well as platforms that are designed to enable access to entertainment, social media and more.

"Every facet of PlayStation will continue to become more powerful."

Much of Sony's event was taken up by games developers showing trailers of titles made for the new PlayStation 4 console. Those games include: Driveclub, inFAMOUS Second Son, Killzone: Shadow Fall, Knack, Diablo III, The Witness and Watch_Dogs.

Sony also announced that the 8GB PlayStation 4 PlayStation 4 games would be able to be played through the cloud, such as the PlayStation Vita, a smartphone or a tablet, with players able to call on friends to help them get through a difficult part of a game.

Forrester analyst James L. McQuivey described the two-hour long Sony event as a waste of time and money.

"Sony believes the future will be like the past and has built the game console to prove it," McQuivey wrote in a blog post.

"While the technology that goes into the console is definitely of the future, the idea behind the PS4 is rooted firmly in the past."

"Most telling is the fact that Sony did not announce a price for the PS4, possibly because they don't know yet what it will cost to make, but more likely because they don't know how aggressively they'll have to subsidise it to sell it."

Cloud sharing, episodic games and new development models are all promised with the launch of PS4.

Not surprisingly, Microsoft's Xbox Live programming director Larry Hryb was quick to mock the Sony event.

"Announce a console without actually showing a console? That's one approach," he tweeted.

Independent gaming experts picked up on other points, including the demands of increased social networking in game would make on Australia's broadband infrastructure.

Swinburne University communications and media lecturer Dr Mark Finn described the Sony event as "underwhelming".

"The PS4 will be a bandwidth hog, which will be fine for countries with good connection but possibly problematic for some parts of the world," Dr Finn said.  "Sony was focusing on fixing problems that were not really problems, like being able to start playing a game while it is downloading."

But he praised the promised feature that people will be ready, and able, to jump into each other's games at any time to help with game play, which he said "would be cool if it works".

Interactive Games and Entertainment Association chief executive officer Ron Curry said the launch of the new platform highlighted the huge impact gaming had on society. "The PS4 announcement highlights the importance of gaming in driving technology and redefining entertainment and the way we connect with each other," he said.

"The obvious implication for Australia is the need for a broadband network that is robust, affordable and fast enough to deliver entertainment as Australian's will no doubt be demanding it."
