TESSA James has been through hell and back but hasn't lost the smile which endeared her to thousands of Home and Away fans.

The former soap star was spotted out on the Gold Coast this week, the first time she has been photographed in public since completing chemotherapy to treat Hodgkin's lymphoma which she was diagnosed with in September.

Looking happy and fit as she and NRL star husband Nate Miles took a casual walk together, the actor's hair loss was the only telltale sign of recent battle with illness.

Earlier this month the 23-year-old posted a photo of herself with her family marking the end of her chemotherapy treatment. "Often fear is the same emotion as excitement, it means you are breaking new ground," she wrote beneath the photo, with the hashtag #newbeginnings.
