Brisbane Lions forward Jonathan Brown speaks about getting hit by a car while cycling.

Brisbane captain Jonathan Brown has broken his silence after being hit by a car while riding his bike on the Gold Coast this morning.

"I'm fine, I've done pretty well out of it I reckon," Brown said.

"I was just out on a training ride with a few blokes, and just entered a roundabout, and unfortunately a car didn't quite see me and collected me on the way through.

"I got hit in the side and my elbow smashed the windscreen. I got 10 stitches in my elbow, and fortunately enough I landed on all fours so got up straight away.

"I went and got treated in hospital, and got a clean bill of health. There were a couple of little dings here and there, but I'll be right for training.

"It was (a bit of a scare). I didn't see it coming, but the body's good. I count myself lucky that I could get away with only minor injuries.

"I had scans on my head and neck and around my hips, which were a little bit sore, but they were all clear. "

Brown said he will report for pre-season training on schedule despite the incident.

"I'll rest up, enjoy the last fortnight of holidays, and then get back into it with the boys on November 5," he said.

"I'll be back on day one of pre-season."

Brown wasn't the only AFL player to have a close call with a car today.

North Melbourne forward Aaron Edwards severed a tendon in his finger when a driver opened their door in front of him as he was riding his bike.

Earlier
, it was reported that  Brown was taken to hospital after he was hit by a car on the Gold Coast - while the vehicle had to be towed.

Brown was on an early morning training ride through the Tallebudgera Valley when his bike was hit by a car.

The AFL star is believed to have sustained an elbow injury in the collision but was able to walk after the crash and he was taken by ambulance to hospital.

It is understood Brown has left hospital soon after receiving 10 stitches in his elbow.

A statement from the Lions said Brown was riding with a group of about 20 cyclists when the accident occurred.

"He was taken to a nearby hospital where he had a thorough check up - including scans - and was cleared of any serious injury", the statement said.

"Brown has contacted Club officials personally and notified them that he is OK. The Lions would like to thank its many members who contacted the Club expressing their concern for Brown's health and wellbeing."

The crash is the latest in a series of setbacks for Brown, who during 2011 was badly injured twice in games and and was hurt at training on a third occasion.

Brown's bike was mangled in the collision and the late model Hyundai that hit him required a tow truck.

The crash occurred at the intersection of Trees Rd and Guineas Creek Rd.
