DISTRAUGHT family members of missing Reynella woman Rachael Moritz believe she is being held against her will.

They say she is at enormous risk and may have been forced to make a phone call on New Year's Day to say she was safe.

Police are investigating the report of a phone call made from a phone booth by the 20-year-old to her father, Paul Moritz, who had dropped her at a friend's house at Greenacres on December 23.

But Mr Moritz said he was unsure if the short call was from Rachael. He reported it to police for further investigation and other family members believe it may have been a hoax or a recorded message.

"A family member that has not been involved in the search for Rachael at all, claims a phone call was possibly made by Rachael saying she was fine," a statement from Rachael's sister, Emmah, and mother Corrina Smith, released yesterday said.

"However, that family member isn't sure it was Rachael. Other family members are also unsure whether that phone call took place; the phone call was allegedly so short that we understand there was no opportunity for interaction which may mean that what was said was tape recorded.

"Nothing about the alleged phone call has been able to be confirmed as yet ... it does not warrant any announcement that it was Rachael and that she is in fact OK."

The call was so short it lead Corrina and Emmah to believe that if it was Rachael, she was under duress to make the call or it was pre-recorded. The details of the alleged call made it clear she was not her normal self, the family said.

"We believe that Rachael is still at enormous risk of harm," the family statement read.

The family has urged the more than 10,000 people now linked to the Facebook Missing Person Rachael Moritz page to keep up the search for her.

"A number of unconfirmed sightings have been passed on to us, many of these having similarities and people reporting these sightings saying they had high-level, multiple concerns about Rachael based on what they were seeing and hearing," Emmah said.

One possible sighting was at a supermarket on Flaxmill Rd, Morphett Vale, on December 27. The family understands police will view security footage from the store.
