A concussed umpire was booed by the crowd as he was being stretchered off the field by medical staff at tonight's Essendon v Sydney game.

Swans player Nick Malceski collided with umpire Troy Pannell, knocking him out and leaving him sprawled across the ground at Etihad Stadium.

But some members of the unruly crowd did not hesitate in booing Pannell as he was transported off the field on a motorised scooter.

The group's antics triggered a wave of revulsion.

Dr Bruce Reid told 3AW Mr Pannell is recovering. "He's pretty alert now, his maths is brilliant... He's fine," he said.
