OFFSPRING has ended for another season, and fans are quite rightly fearful that the treasured Aussie drama may not return to our screens.
But maybe it's finally time to let it go.
SPOILER ALERT: Don't read on if you plan to watch the finale later (don't say we didn't warn you)
Uncharacteristically, the season five finale — which coincided with the anniversary of Patrick's death — wrapped up tonight in one very tidy, emotionally satisfying hour with minimal loose ends.
This all makes sense, given that producers haven't been able to secure the future of the show — yet.
Channel Ten chief programming officer Beverley McGarvey confirmed that the future of the show was still up in the air.
"[Producers] Imogen Banks and John Edwards are the best in the business and we're obviously very proud of everything that Offspring has achieved," she said.
"Network Ten would, of course, like to proceed with series six and we are in discussions with the producers now."
And producers still have hurdles to clear with the network, one of those being that having surpassed 65 episodes Offspring no longer qualifies for a Screen Australia rebate. This means the costs — even before cast pay rises — will rise by 20 per cent.

But whether of not Offspring returns next year, it doesn't really matter. Over the course of five seasons we've seen some of the most gloriously messy, unpredictable and fiercely moving moments ever to hit the small screen from some of our nation's most talented actors. Aussie viewers have been hooked from season one, and despite being left exhausted by the death of Matthew Le Nevez's character last year, they faithfully tuned in again this time around.
Tonight, viewers can sleep peacefully knowing that each and every character (save for Thomas The Scumbag) went out on a high.
Nina is staying at St Francis and has decided to "jump in" with Leo; Billie didn't get on the plane to London with Mick, and then neither did Mick; Zara looks on track to fulfilling her dream of become a doctor; Kim and her new partner are crazy in love; Phillip is bracing himself for fatherhood; crazed pair Cherie and Martin are planning to move in together; even adorable Ange seems to have met a man.
Nina's final words to her one-year-old daughter on her birthday served as the perfect "The End" for devoted fans: "Yes, Zoe, this is your family. And it's always going to be like this," she said.
Offspring certainly feels finished. And I, for one, am content.
