Ghost ship discovered off Hawaii

RESEARCHERS have made an exciting discovery off the coast of Hawaii: a relatively intact "ghost ship" that had been lost in a watery grave for more than 60 years.

The team from the University of Hawaii (UH) and the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries found the vessel submerged in 60 metres of water, its solitary mast still standing and its wheel intact.

It was resting 32 kilometres away from the coast of Oahu, ScienceDaily reported.

Called the Dickenson, and later renamed the USS Kailua, the cable ship had been launched in Pennsylvania in 1923. It had been carrying telecommunications equipment around the world.

However, it was torpedoed and sunk in Oahu 23 years later, when nobody wanted it anymore. Its final resting place wasn't recorded.

"It is always a thrill when you are closing in on a large sonar target with the Pisces submersible and you don't know what big piece of history is going to come looming out of the dark," Terry Kerby, Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory's (HURL) submersible pilot said of the find.

"One of our first views of the USS Kailua was the classic helms wheel on the fantail. The ship was surprisingly intact for a vessel that was sunk with a torpedo.

"The upper deck structures from the bow to the stern were well-preserved and showed no sign of torpedo damage."

Researchers were amazed to see the Navy's identification number of IX-71 was still painted on the bow of the ship.

A series of wrecks have been located during sonar surveys of the sea floor off Oahu recently, including a Japanese midget submarine that was sunk during the Pear Harbour attack.

The ghost ship is considered a historic site.
