A YOUNG Melbourne mega-blogger facing scrutiny over terminal brain cancer claims that made her an online sensation, once described herself as a "distinguished psychopath".

Belle Gibson, the founder of hugely popular The Whole Pantry wellness app and book, has gone to ground after allegations a range of illnesses she professed to have overcome were false.

Amid growing doubts over her story, the Herald Sun can reveal Ms Gibson, 23, was a high school dropout who worked as a trainee at catering supply company PFD Food Services in Brisbane, where staff described her as a "lost soul".

"She was always a bit out there," one former colleague said. "She was a bit disturbed and would come out with some really vivid stories.

"She really didn't have any family or friends and used to hang on to people."

A friend told the Herald Sun he believed Ms Gibson may never have had cancer.

"She was talking about having cancer before she wrote the book, she was talking about it in 2009," he said.

Ms Gibson, also known as Annabelle Natalie Gibson, tweeted in September 2009: @bellmneb: "Is a distinguished physcopath (sic)."

The following month she vented: "Obama won the nobel peace prize. This is more f***ed (sic) then the government giving me cancer. #obamawinsnobelprize."

Ms Gibson claimed her brain cancer diagnosis led her to develop the world's first health, wellness and lifestyle app in The Whole Pantry in 2013, which encourages healthy eating, positive thinking and a wholesome lifestyle.

But she went to ground after questions were raised over her claims to have battled through a stroke, seizures, the terminal brain tumour, and cancer in the liver, spleen and kidneys.

Ms Gibson has been living in a rented $1 million apartment in the bayside suburb of Elwood.

Police did a welfare check on her on Tuesday night, but it is believed she is overseas.

Ms Gibson's partner said outside the home that she was not there and declined to comment further.

Consumer Affairs Victoria has launched an investigation into the fundraising activities of The Whole Pantry, amid claims donations pledged publicly to charities were not made.

The Whole Pantry said in a statement on its Facebook page that its accounting team had delayed payments.

Her book was due to be published next month in the US and UK, but the director of publicity at Atria Books in the US, Paul Olsewski, said last night the company was seeking clarification from Ms Gibson about her history and charitable activities.

In Australia, Penguin Random House spokeswoman Camilla Subeathar said: "We are concerned about the issues raised and have sought an explanation from Ms Gibson."

An Apple spokeswoman yesterday said it was "too early to say" whether the company would be removing Ms Gibson's app — which was downloaded 200,000 times in the first month — from its app store.
