THE unlicensed teenager at the centre of a fatal joyride which killed her younger sister is yet to be interviewed by police.

Fraser Coast teenager Curtsie Silcox, 15, is today being supported by family after crashing her father's ute at Paterson, near Maryborough, yesterday.

Curtsie's 14-year-old sister Ophelia was killed when their Nissan Navara utility smashed into a tree about 12.20pm.

Acting Inspector Troy Pukallus said investigators would consider the circumstances of the crash before deciding whether to lay any charges.

"We have to wait for the driver to be in a better state both mentally and physically to be interviewed about the matter," he said.

"Before we commence any prosecution proceedings the two things we have to consider is the sufficiency of evidence and whether it would be in the public interest.

"All we can say is that its still under investigation and those are the things we have to take into account."

Insp Pukallus said the crash appeared to be a joyride gone horribly wrong.

"There was no set destination," he said.

"It was just a decision to take the car for a drive and go onto a public road and this was the outcome.

"Unfortunately it's a tragic outcome for a poor decision."

The sisters, talented show jumpers from Munna Creek, were just minutes from home when Curtsie failed to navigate a slight bend and rise in the gravel road.

The two-wheel-drive slid sideways into a tree, crushing the passenger side of the ute and killing Ophelia instantly.

Curtsie was taken to Gympie Hospital suffering from shock and minor injuries.

She was last night being comforted by her devastated family.

The girls' parents, Russell and Terri Silcox, own building business Annandale Homes and are well known within the Fraser Coast community.

It is understood that at the time of the crash Mrs Silcox was at work in Maryborough and Mr Silcox was away working in Emerald.

Insp Pukallus said the girls had been wearing seatbelts and that inexperience probably contributed to the crash.

"It's still under investigation but obviously the two main factors would be the inexperience of the driver and the road conditions," he said.

"They just went for a drive. Kids will do these things."

The occupants of a remote property on Paterson Road heard the crash and called police.

"The actual scene was fairly confronting for emergency services, especially given the age of the occupants, and given that all of the emergency services respondents have teenage children," Insp Pukallus said.

"That it's an avoidable tragedy makes it even worse.

"The road toll is something we're very conscious of and we're trying to adopt every strategy we can to reduce it and get the message out there."

Insp Pukallus urged motorists to consider their driving behaviours.

"The north coast region has recorded about 20 more deaths than at the same time last year," he said.

"I've been to two terrible scenes in the space of a month.

"We just want to get the message out to the community to consider their driving behaviours."

The tragedy has rocked the small rural community of Munna Creek and surrounding areas.

"My heart goes out to your mum, dad and family but especially your sister," one person wrote on a Facebook tribute site for Ophelia.

"She will need all the love and support from everyone around her."

Ophelia's friends have agreed to honour the popular schoolgirl by donning black arm bands and wearing black socks today.
