Yes, it really is an actual thing. The allure of combining drinking with competition proved too strong for the Americans, with $50,000 up for grabs in Las Vegas. Five Australian teams also competed.
WHO would have thought a simple beer drinking game could score you $50,000. Welcome to the world of Beer Pong.
The game of beer pong is simple. Two teams stand at opposite ends on a table, where 10 cups filled with beer are placed in a bowling-pin formation. Each team takes turns tossing beer pong balls (similar to table tennis balls) at their opponent's cup formation. If a ball goes into a cup, the cup is removed from the game – and its contents drunk. The first team to eliminate its entire opponent's cups wins.
Sounds like fun? No, this is a deadly serious sport.
So serious in fact that many of the 160 teams who attended the World Series of Beer Pong in Vegas (of course) last week opted to fill some of their cups with water and competition organisers only filled four of the ten cups with liquid. Beer drinking and busting for a wee obviously reduces your chance of having the co-ordination to win.
The event attracted more than 500 teams, five of them from Australia, two from Melbourne, two from Sydney, and one from Winmalee in the Blue Mountains.
The bad news? We are not the champion beer pong players of the world. That title goes to a team called "Drinkin Smokin Straight West Coastin" from California.
After 50 rounds, the tournament came down to one cup as "Drinkin Smokin Straight West Coastin" battled "Smashing Time". The cup was sunk by team Drinkin Smokin Straight West Coastin" making them $50,000 richer.
