Piers' explosive showdown on guns

IT WAS never going to be a cordial chat - but when Piers Morgan tried to interview the man who started a petition to have him deported, the results were explosive.

In a spectacularly bad-tempered confrontation, Alex Jones challenged Morgan to a boxing match after his calls for tougher gun laws in the wake of the Sandy Hook school shooting.

Mocking Morgan's English accent, Jones - himself a controversial radio host - branded the star a "redcoat", referring to the uniforms the British wore in the American War of Independence, The Daily Mail reports.

He said: "1776 [the year of the US's Declaration of Independence] will commence again, if you try to take our firearms ... we will not relinquish them! Do you understand?"

Morgan invited Jones on to his program after his petition attracted more than 100,000 signatures, but the host struggled to get a word in.

"England has a lot lower gun crime rate because you took all the guns," Jones raged. "But you've got hordes of people burning down cities and beating old women's brains out every day."

Continuing to shout at the top of his voice, Jones added: "You think you're a tough guy? Have me back with a boxing ring and I'll wear red, white, and blue."

The White House has released a statement saying:

"The White House responds to all petitions that cross the threshold and we will respond to this one. In the meantime, it is worth remembering that the freedom of expression is a bedrock principle in our democracy."
