IT'S game over for My Kitchen Rules newlyweds Carol and Adam after a spectacular showdown against Will and Steve in Kitchen HQ.

It was clear from the beginning that things weren't going to work out for Carol and "deadbeat dad" Adam.

After disagreeing over how long they should pickle the mushrooms for their seared scallops and Asian mushrooms entree, it turns out Adam should have listened to Carol.

"Even though those scallops are sweet, they're not sweet enough to counterbalance the acidity of this dish," Manu said.

"A little touch of sugar would've made a huge difference."

Meanwhile, the boys' entree of zucchini flowers with whipped goat's curd and burnt butter was praised as "technically spot on".

Adam tried to play catch up with their main of goji stuffed pork fillet with daikon, but the flavours were too much.

"When you think about it they probably don't go together, but for us we actually think they do ... And that's the risk we're willing to take," he admitted.

But the judges didn't agree, with Liz Egan saying there were "just a few notes where it didn't quite work".

Will and Steve impressed with their "confident" cooking — serving up a main of

roast spatchcock with orange and ginger carrots.

But the boys came unstuck with their ambitious dessert of blood orange with white chocolate mascarpone and coconut tuile which the judges labelled as "confused".

And while Carol and Adam dodged further criticism with their dessert of crisp apple cigars with cinnamon ice-cream, it wasn't enough to get them back in the game.

The boys took out the kitchen battle with a 47 to 40 win.

While Adam was clearly deflated with the loss, he wished the boys well.

"MKR has been an amazing tournament but unfortunately for us it's game, set and match," he said.

My Kitchen Rules airs 7.30pm Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday on Channel 7.
