GREG Gibbins wasn't a man that went looking for trouble.

But friends say the popular car spray painter wouldn't walk away from anyone who needed help — and police are investigating whether his good nature may have been a factor in the incident that cost him his life.

Mr Gibbins, of Kanwal on the New South Wales Central Coast, was fatally stabbed in the chest late on Sunday night outside a pizza shop in Toukley after he'd been to a music festival at the Beachcomber Hotel.

The 28-year-old was rushed to Gosford Hospital in cardiac arrest but couldn't be saved. He died early yesterday morning.

A friend of Mr Gibbins was also stabbed but does not have life threatening injuries.

Police said, according to their early investigations, the attack was "unprovoked" and a "good citizen who had been behaving himself" had been killed without a word being said between Mr Gibbins and his attacker.

It is yet to be determined whether there was any connection between the two incidents.

Detective Inspector David Waddell said police were looking at every possibility and hadn't ruled anything out.

"It is an ongoing investigation ... We're still examining the circumstances and the motive for it."

Detectives are examining CCTV footage from the Beachcomber Hotel and still want witnesses to come forward.

A 20-year-old man, Bradley James Brooks, has been charged with murder. He appeared in Wyong Local Court today and was remanded in custody until next month.

Brendon Villiers first met Mr Gibbins when they were both three-years-old and were neighbours. They've been friends ever since.

"It's devastating. He was a guy that worked hard and lived his life to the fullest."

He had heard his friend may have been helping someone and wasn't surprised. "That's the sort of person he was."

The manner of his death was even more shocking given how peaceful he was.

"He wasn't the sort of guy that went out of his way looking for anything bad. He didn't do drugs, he just liked a few beers ... He loved the gym and his footy."

Toukley and Kanwal, are only a short distance away but Mr Villiers said the community wasn't small enough that everyone knew each other, so it was unlikely Mr Gibbins had met his alleged attacker.

Mr Gibbins had been looking forward to playing for his Wyong Roos team, but their match was cancelled. It was only then he decided to go to the music festival.

Friend Andrew Casey spent Saturday and Sunday morning with him.

"He was upbeat, just his normal self. He'd been planning on playing footy and hadn't talked much of going to the festival."

"Everyone who met him was touched in some way. He was very loyal, it was just the sort of bloke he was."

Mr Casey didn't expect the reality would hit him until after the funeral.

Another friend, Cara Giusti, agreed Mr Gibbins didn't court trouble.

"He wasn't the loud boisterous type," she said.

She would remember him as "a man of his word and a true friend".

Ms Giusti said he'd hoped to travel later in the year and was thinking of becoming a firefighter.
