McIlroy calls off wedding to Wozniacki

Former world No.1 golfer Rory McIlroy on Wednesday announced he had broken off his engagement to Danish tennis player Caroline Wozniacki only days after sending out the wedding invitations.

The 25-year-old Northern Irishman and two-time major champion said the issuing of the invitations had made him aware that he was not ready for marriage.

"There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people," he explained through a statement issued by his Dublin-based communications consultants.

"The problem is mine," McIlroy said.

"The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realise that I wasn't ready for all that marriage entails.

"I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we've had. I will not be saying anything more about our relationship in any setting."

Wozniacki is a former world No.1 on the WTA tour but sits 14th in the latest women's rankings.

McIlroy has dropped to 10th in the latest men's golf rankings.

The golden sporting couple's high profile break-up came on the eve of McIlroy's appearance at the European PGA Championship at Wentworth, where he said he had never considered pulling out of the top event.

"I just want to get my head into golf and concentrate on the tournament and try and do well.

"I want to drive straight into it and keep myself busy.

"I am not going to lie - it is going to be very difficult but, at least when I get inside the ropes, I can try and concentrate on the shots at hand.

"I didn't think there was any reason to pull out.

"There is no good time to end a relationship - I had made a commitment to be here. This is the European Tour's flagship event and I am very proud to be part of the European Tour.

"It is no different to anyone else. Everyone has been through break-ups and I want to concentrate this week on answering questions on golf."

McIlroy and Wozniacki met almost three years ago in Munich at a David Haye-Wladimir Klitschko boxing match and the relationship has been in the media ever since.

McIlroy and Wozniacki announced their short-lived engagement last New Year's Eve in Sydney.

The former world No.1s in their chosen sports posted pictures of themselves on Twitter with a diamond ring.

"Happy New Year everyone! I have a feeling it's going to be a great year!! My first victory of 2014 #shesaidyes!!" McIlroy wrote.

Wozniacki posted: "Happy New Year everyone! Rory and I started 2014 with a bang! ... I said YES!"

The engagement came after rumours of a split in 2013.

McIlroy captured his first major title at the 2011 US Open and added another at the 2012 PGA Championship.

Wozniacki, 23, still seeks her first grand slam title, her deepest run in a major being to the 2009 US Open final.

Heartbreak already on When Love Comes To Town

As host of Channel Nine's new reality matchmaking show, Natalie Gruzlewski talks to news.com.au about the trip of a lifetime, joining a bus full of single women searching for their perfect man.

HAVING lost firecracker JJ at the first hurdle, the remaining eleven ladies were back on the bus to Kangaroo Island in South Australia for the latest episode of When Love Comes To Town.

Let's see how it all went down.

Meeting their men

As the girls arrive on Kangaroo Island, we get to learn a little more about their individual backstories. Art teacher Jemma has a seven-year-old son, while 22-year-old retail assistant Monica is a romantic at heart.

"I love reading romance novels because I like the happy endings. My favourite romance novel is Fifty Shades of Grey," she says.

"People have started to notice that I am a little bit of a flirt," says Rebekah, as she strides confidently off the bus in a shirt that could be left on during heart surgery.

Yeah, Rebekah. We noticed.

Kangaroo Island's most eligible blokes are Tom and Gav. Look, we don't mean to be shallow, but they're not quite as dreamy as the Margaret River lads from last night's episode. Kangaroo Island, step it up.

Tom is a 31-year-old mechanic-slash-farmer, which we're guessing is the Kangaroo Island equivalent of being an actor-slash-model.

"What even is a stonemason?" - Abbey Source: Channel 9

Gav is a stonemason, which leaves the ladies confused. "He said something about stone? Hedging? What is that?" asks Abbey.

Both these island boys have their lives sorted — house, job — but no girl.

"I can usually tell when I like a guy if I feel a bit sick," says 24-year-old corporate PR worker Renee, who may be confusing love with gastro.

The group date

With the girls fairly evenly split between Tom and Gav, it's time for these two blokes to turn on the charm. Tom takes the girls to his fish farm.

"For the country lifestyle, you do have to get dirty. To see them having a go at that gives me an idea of what they're about," he says. Tom, you hornbag.

They have to bait hooks to fish, and Rebekah's the first to get among the rotting fish heads, despite the fact she's a vegetarian. Clearly she's never heard Meatloaf's classic I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That).

Afterwards, Rebekah and Tom scurry off to the bushes for some awkward one-on-one flirting. Rebekah says she loves Tom's eyes — "I'm swimming in them" — but when pressed, can't actually remember what colour they are.

Stonemason Gav takes the girls to his house to break rocks. Basically it's hard labour — not so much a group date as a chain gang.

"I can see very quickly that this group date's going to sort it out for me; it's going to make my mind up," says Gav. We're confused — is he looking for a girlfriend or an apprentice?

During the group date, Gemma mentions to Gav that she has a seven-year-old son, which doesn't scare him off. "I've been in this situation before," he says.

Back on the fish farm, Tom takes Monica aside for a little one-on-one chat. For some reason, he's suddenly drenched from head to toe, while she stays dry. What's the story — does he sweat profusely when feeling romantic? Did one of the other girls think she was on Man O Man and push him into the fishpond?

Gav takes Sydney accountant Shelley aside for a chat of their own. He's concerned he hasn't yet gotten to hear much from her.

"Well... I love snow. It's probably one of my favourite things in the world. I'm a little bit obsessed with it," she tells him.

So there you go, Gav. Shelley loves snow.

Solo dates

For their solo dates, Tom picks Rebekah The Flirt (who helpfully says "I'm up for anything") and Kelly the 29-year-old babysitter.

Gav's decision isn't quite so easy: he explains that there are two girls he's physically attracted to, and another two he connects with intellectually. "I've got the classic boy's decision: Do I chase rainbows?" he says. We're not sure that's a Classic Boy's Decision so much as a Mariah Carey song lyric.

Gav picks snow bunny Shelley and young mum Gemma. He never does tell us whether these are the two who stimulate his mind or his ... swimsuit area.

Gav says he wants to cement the idea of Kangaroo Island being an 'enjoyable place to live,' so takes Shelley …. fishing. They're confronted by a marauding flock of pelicans, one of whom hits Shelley in the face. Totes romantic babes.

On his date with Gemma, Gav asks her how likely she would be to consider staying on and giving things a go. She says it would be difficult because she has to stay near her son and his father, which begs the question: Why did she go on this show in the first place?

Gemma then tells Gav that she doesn't want any more children, while he does. Something tells us Gemma's getting back on that bus.

For his date with Kelly, Tom takes her oyster shucking. Kelly finds oysters disgusting. "They taste like snot," she squirms.

Rebekah scores a more civilised date with Tom, as he takes her for a day exploring Kangaroo Island, finishing up with a pub lunch.

Time to choose

It's time for the girls to decide whether to get back on the bus, and it's bad news for Gav. Gemma lets him down first, and then it's Shelley's turn: "You're one of the most perfect guys I've ever met, but the reason this is so hard is because of the isolation of the island, and I would never want to resent you for that," she tells him.

Shelley, you've specifically signed up to meet a guy living in a regional and remote area — you can't really use that as a reason not to date him.

Rebekah's first, and as she tells him her reason for getting back on the bus is that she just couldn't cope with living in such a rural, remote area, a big bug lands in her eye, which kinda validates her point.

Finally a happy ending though — Kelly stays! We'll check in next week to see how she and Tom are getting on.

Last episode's match

This episode we also checked back in with last night's love match, JJ and Adam at Margaret River. Has romance blossomed? Ish. JJ says she finds Adam "hot" but "mildly irritating".

"I don't know whether I want to kiss him or kill him," she says.

The romance has to stop for now, as JJ's heading home to Melbourne, but they have plans to see each other again.

Adam says he wants her to stay forever. "I just love her to bits."

Abbott, Hockey GP fee blunders

EMBARRASING bloopers by Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Treasurer Joe Hockey have revealed they don't understand who will be forced to pay their controversial new $7 GP fee.

And their mistakes have undermined the government's attempt to sell a tough budget to angry voters.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott told Melbourne radio listeners yesterday an average person would only have to pay the $7 GP fee ten times and then they would be bulk billed.

In fact the government has put no limit on the number of times an ordinary worker will pay the $7 charge, however, there is a ten visit safety net just for pensioners and children.

Radio 3AW host Neil Mitchell asked the Prime Minister yesterday: "If I am the average person going along to the doctor what is the safety net on the $7 co-payment?"

The Prime Minister replied :"Well, it is 10 visits and then the standard bulk-billing arrangements will apply."

Mr Abbott's office ammended his statement late yesterday. "The safety net of ten visits applies to concession card holders and people aged under 16", it said.

The Australian Medical Association accused Treasurer Joe Hockey of also getting it wrong when he says the chronically ill won't be hit by the $7 GP fee.

The Treasurer told Korey Gunnis who suffers from eight chronic illnesses on Monday: "You wouldn't be hit by the so-called Medicare co-payment. You wouldn't be affected."

Mr Hockey, on the ABC's Q&A program, went on to say: "No, you wouldn't, because you'd be on a care plan with your doctor. Obviously you've got a number of chronic diseases. In that situation you are not affected by the co-payment,"

RELATED: Treasurer - "Enough with the photos"

While it is true that Medicare's chronic disease management item will be exempt from the $7 GP fee, this is only for one doctors visit a year where the GP plans the patients care for their chronic illnesses.

Australian Medical Association GP spokesman Dr Brian Morton says every other visit the patient with a chronic illness makes to the GP or medical test that is ordered would be hit by a $7 GP fee.

"He either doesn't understand or is misusing the statistic or is lying," Dr Morton told News Corporation.

"The chronic disease management items are one off, they are not for treatment," he said.

A diabetic patient would have to see their GP every three months and pay the $7 fee and regular tests of their blood sugar levels and kidney function would also attract a $7 charge, Dr Morton said.

A spokeswoman for Mr Hockey said yesterday "his comments stand".

When asked whether the government would be introducing new chronic disease treatment items exempt from the $7 charge she said "the legislation was still being drafted…I can't give any detail".

The budget makes no provision for such a chronic disease item nor does it provide any funding for it.

In further confusing signals from the government, Liberal National Party backbencher Steve Ciobo also told ABC radio listeners 'if they have a chronic disease they are exempt from making the co-payment".

A spokesman for Health Minister Peter Dutton conceded the chronically ill could face the $7 GP fee.

"They could, it's up to the doctor," he said.

And he confirmed the exemption for chronic disease applied only to the preparation of a GP management plan or the preparation of a team care arrangement.

Opposition health spokeswoman Catherine King described Mr Ciobo's and Mr Hockey's claims on the copayment and chronic illness as a "lie".

"This is a blatant lie. If you have a chronic disease you are not exempt from the this cruel GP tax," Shadow Minister for Health Catherine King said.

The Australian Medical Association says it will be asking Health Minister Mr Peter Dutton to modify the $7 GP fee when it meets him on Friday at its annual conference.

AMA president Dr Steve Hambleton said the government needed to look at extending the 10 visit safety net to low income people with a chronic illness, and end of life care.

Vaccinations should not attract the $7 fee, he said.

The heart-stopping TV moment you probably missed

IT was the much-hyped TV show which created more questions than it answered and probably lost a few fans along the way. (Spoiler alert)

While the ending was sudden and a strange way to cap off the series the final scene had one big revelation - agent Bellamy's identity.

While twitter was abuzz with viewers questioning the way it ended many were blown away by his connection with the returned.

Others felt the ending didn't answer much at all and left viewers hanging.

Either way few would have predicted the twist in Bellamy's connection.

Resurrection managed a whopping 1.9 million viewers when it hit Aussie screens back in March, but numbers began to drop, with many commenting that Seven's supernatural thriller was "too weird". Last week it managed just 782,000 viewers.

RESURRECTION: The show everyone was talking about

But for those who hung on for the eight episodes, the final scene was a reward worth waiting for — it finally answered what the hell government agent, J Martin Bellamy (Omar Epps) is doing in a small town dealing with an issue which he should long have wiped his hands of.

Days after Jacob Langston and Caleb Richards return from the dead they are soon joined by Rachel.

A raft of twists and turns and a whole heap of questions later and the town of Arcadia is in chaos after being inundated with hundreds more resurrected people.

The military has stepped in to help maintain control after Agent Bellamy is forced to call his boss to deal with the crisis. He then not only has a hostile sheriff but an angry town on his hands as well.

Some of the town fear the returned while others are glad long-lost loved ones are back from the dead and Agent Bellamy has his hands full protecting Jacob.

But it wasn't until the very last scene of the show when Bellamy's identity is revealed — and his role becomes clear.

Wind back to the scene the night before and a returned African American family, the Thompsons, are staying with the Langstons after their daughter Jenny befriended Jacob.

The parents reveal they drowned years before but their young baby Robert didn't "come back" with them.

Henry Langston tells the couple he has a brother (Sherriff Fred Langston) and can watch out for Robert and, much to Mrs Thompson's relief, she tells Henry her son has a scar on the back of his neck "like a crescent".

In the last scene of the finale, viewers see Agent Bellamy and Jacob escape, before they stop on a dirt road to examine some bugs.

Suddenly, he and Jacob are surrounded by a swarm of cars and a helicopter and as Jacob grabs his saviour he reveals a mark on the back of his neck — in the shape of a crescent.

Yes, it appears Agent Bellamy is the son and apparently missing Robert Thompson.

The sudden end will no doubt leave viewers intrigued enough to see what happens next season.

Here are the other heart-stopping moments from the finale:

• Rachel looking down at her own dead body in the morgue. She had been shot the episode before and came back from the dead for the second time.

• Maggie meeting the dead mother she lost when she was a baby. Firstly, Maggie seems older than her mum Barbara. But Barbara also drops a bombshell revelation about her own father (Sheriff Langston). She also reveals she had been back in town for a week but had chosen instead to stay with her lover Sam, who she had been having an affair with before she died.

• The moment Sheriff Langston cries and hugs his long lost wife Barbara. Overjoyed his wife is alive again, Sheriff Langston tells his wife he forgives the past and understands — only for Barbara to reveal it's too late and she is now with her lover. He seems to accept her decision, but loses the plot while watching old video footage of her and Maggie.

• The moment Sheriff Langston plans his revenge on Barbara and the returned. Agent Bellamy's boss has called in the military on the understanding they were helping flood victims. But an angry and vengeful Sherriff Langston tells the military head "these people are dangerous" and they need to concentrate on protecting the living, not the dead, before revealing the real reason they are here to help.

• The phone call the Langstons receive telling them to come to the high school. The call purportedly from the Sheriff's office tells them they need to bring Jacob to the school for flu shots and other procedures, unaware it is actually a trap.

• Agent Bellamy and Maggie realise they are part of the trap. Trapped inside the school hall with the returned the pair realise they have no phone signal and along with Pastor Tom devise a plan to get out of there, freeing as many of the returned as possible.

• When the Langstons tearfully ask Agent Bellamy to take their son and escape. Realising the school setting was a trap for the returned and in particular, Barbara, Agent Bellamy sent the Langstons home but heads over to their house to warn them to run. Fearing they would be hunted down they instead ask Agent Bellamy to take him, sparking a tearful goodbye between Jacob and his parents who promised never to let him go.

• The moment Henry Langston turns on his brother. Realising Jacob was gone, Sheriff Langston heads over to his brother's place to find him. The confrontation worsens when Henry turns on his brother telling him "everything the old man said about you was right".

When Love Comes To Town: Adam and JJ’s romance

CHANNEL Nine's latest dating show When Love Comes To Town kicked off tonight, combining twelve city girls, two county boys, and one rather intimidating big black bus.

The premise is simple: these city girls traverse the country, stopping in regional areas to meet eligible bachelors. If the chemistry's right, they can choose to stay on and pursue a relationship. Otherwise, it's back on the bus and on to the next far-flung locale.

First stop on their countrywide quest for love: Margaret River, south of Perth.

As the bus pulls into town, the girls are just about frothing at the mouth at the prospect of meeting their first two men. These ladies are THIRSTY.

As they step off the bus, the girls are welcomed by the Margaret River locals, including a group of cheering primary school students. Which teacher organised that field trip?

"OK grade twos, pick a buddy and stick together. We're off to find out if Sydney PR maven Renee can put aside the scars of previous relationships and find love once more! Pay attention — there will be a test."

Margaret River's best bachelors are Adam and Moshe. Babes, the both of them.

Adam is a 29-year-old carpenter/surfer, which means we're treated to various shots of him lifting heavy things while wearing a singlet. He dearly loves his widowed mother, and he's bought a block of land to build his dream home — he just needs a good woman to live in it. You're already a quivering puddle on the floor, aren't you?

Moshe is a 26-year-old baby-faced lawyer. He's a sweetheart, but when it comes time for the women to choose who they'd like to get to know, it seems most are transfixed by Adam's guns — he scores seven girls to Moshe's five.

"I didn't think I'd get a guernsey at all," Adam says, which seems like false modesty to us. Adam, a dozen women have been bussed into town specifically to woo you: if you can't get a date, something has gone very wrong.

After the girls have made their selections, host Nat Gruzlewski wishes them well: "Ladies and gents, good luck — let's hope lightening strikes!" We trust she's speaking figuratively, otherwise this could be a very short show.

Adam's activity for his bevy of seven? A trip to his house to build a chook shed. The girls aren't exactly thrilled with this prospect ... until their suitor takes off his shirt to bring out the big guns. The girls all squeal, which, to be fair, does seem an entirely appropriate reaction. Adam acts all bashful once more. 'Oh, these old things? I completely forgot I had arms ...'

Moshe takes his fivesome to the town fair, where contestant Jess takes an unusual tactic to show her affection: ramming him repeatedly on the dodgem cars. Smooth move, Jess — nothing puts simple country blokes in the mood like violent emasculation.

Back at the chook shed, Kelly knows how to play the game.

"All this work's made me thirsty. Do you reckon you could take me inside and get me a drink?' she asks Adam in front of the other women, who shoot her daggers.

Inside, their one-on-one time is a bit awkward. Kelly tells him about her time spent living in the Bahamas, except she pronounces it 'Bah-hummus'. Then she asks him if he wants kids.

Kelly: "So, do you want children?" Adam: "Shhh. Look into my arms." Source: Channel 9

"They're... growin' on me. All my mates have 'em, and other family have 'em..." is his response, which suggests he's as enthusiastic about having children as he would be about having intestinal worms.

"Kelly's awesome ... but she's specific in what she wants and it seems like she won't be messed around," says Adam. Yeah, self-esteem is a real turn-off.

Back at the fair, Moshe takes car hire co-ordinator Jess 'round the back paddock (note: not a metaphor) and she confesses that she's looking for her 'magic man'. He chuckles nervously, unsure if this means she's expecting a card trick.

Over at his house, Adam invites JJ to sit on his tractor (note: not a metaphor) and issues her with this charming ultimatum:

"Obviously I've got to pick two girls. I don't want you to sell yourself to me, but ... give me a reason why I should pick you." He's lucky he's got dem arms.

At the fair, Moshe takes Renee and Mindy for a walk through the parlour games, and wins a 'super banana' stuffed toy for them — presumably just so he can utter the following words: 'Do you girls wanna share my super banana?'

Group dates over and done with, chook shed built, it's time for the boys to choose two girls each they'd like to spend some solo time with.

Moshe picks Jessica and Renee. For Adam, it's Abbey and the fiesty, funny JJ (who's already proven the standout star of the female cast).

For their solo date, Adam takes Abbey surfing. To change into his wetsuit, he first has to nude up on the beach. Once he puts it on, he realises its on backwards, so he has to get naked again. Abbey quietly prays he's also got it on inside out so he has to disrobe once more.

Moshe takes his date, Jess, to a cave. Note: in general, leading a woman into a dark hole in the ground does not make for a great first date.

Actually, scratch that. There's booze in the cave. Huzzah!

For his second solo date, Moshe takes Renee to a forest. Cave? Forest? Let's be glad there's not a third date or that girl could look forward to a picturesque nightwalk around an abandoned quarry.

For the final date of episode one, Adam takes JJ to his local pub. He'd previously told her that he thought their personalities might clash, and JJ tells him that his remark hit a raw nerve because she'd heard similar complaints from previous partners.

The mere mention of 'previous partners' sends Adam into a tailspin. Apparently in his world, it ain't cool if a girl you've just met admits she hasn't, in fact, spent her life in a hermetically sealed box waiting for you to arrive and sweep her off her feet.

Thankfully, JJ pulls him up on this dodgy behaviour, and they patch things up. They've survived their first fight, and it's clear there's a real attraction between them.

Solo dates over, it's time for the four girls to make their decision. Stay in town and give love a shot, or back on the bus?

Moshe's first in the firing line, and it isn't good news. Jess decides she's getting back on the bus ... and so does Renee. Poor Renee, having to be the second girl in 30 seconds to dump Moshe. Just look at her face:

"Thanks for your honesty and it's been great having that time getting to know you," Moshe blurts out, as his poor little heart breaks on camera.

There's better news for Adam. While Abbey felt they had a real connection, she tells him she's getting back on the bus. This paves the way for JJ to stay — which she does. Shield star: ‘I shot my wife’

MICHAEL Jace, who played a Los Angeles policeman in TV's The Shield, has been charged in the fatal shooting of his wife, April.

Officers arrived at the couple's home in Hyde Park, Los Angeles about 8.30pm the previous evening to find 40-year-old April Jace dead inside.

"It looks to have started as a domestic-related incident," Officer Sara Faden told the LA Times.

TMZ says Jace called 911 and said "I shot my wife."

The 50-year-old played Julien Lowe in The Shield, a rookie coke in Los Angeles who rose to become a detective in the series, which aired from 2002-2008.

He has also had roles in Forrest Gump and Planet of the Apes.

The couple were married nine years and have three children, the eldest believed to be from a previous relationship. It is not clear if the children were home during the shooting.

Jace was married to Jennifer Bitterman before divorcing in 2002.

Garwood inks place on The Voice

Musical theatre singer Matthew Garwood has used the blind auditions to his advantage and winning a place on Team Ricky.

MATTHEW Garwood knows all about the importance of creating a good first impression.

Raised the grandson of Baptist church minister, blessed with a voice that belongs on Broadway and with a hunger to take his talents to the world, the 24-year-old Tasmanian looked to The Voice to make his mark.

But it was his eye-catching ink which had the show's celebrity coaches on their feet and so tongue-tied they forgot to even ask the singer his name.

Using the blind audition concept to his advantage, the musical theatre performer sealed the final place on Ricky Martin's team with a flawless rendition of The Phantom Of The Opera classic, All Of Ask Of You.

After turning Martin's chair, Garwood turned more heads with his colourful body art, which is inked across his chest, up one arm, over both hands, from "big toe to butt cheek" on one leg and reaching right up to his chin.

Dazzled by what Joel Madden described as the "juxtaposition" of his look and sound, coach will.i.am thought the Launceston singer had pranked The Voice audience, teasing: "I know what happened ... you're messing with us. Somebody else was singin' and then you came out and took their place, huh?"

Madden, a tattoo devotee, said with Garwood's look he should have been singing songs by Welsh metal band, Bullet For My Valentine.

But it's in defying those expectations, Garwood told NewsCorp, that he finds his musical ambition and satisfaction.

``It's what's so great about The Voice. You aren't judged on your appearance and why it's perfect for me," he said.

"I could go up there and completely feel comfortable in what I (was) doing without being judged on appearance."

While will.i.am was playing safe with the final places on his team, he told the Team Ricky singer he liked his look and sound. Or as he put it "the fusion without the confusion."

Garwood told the coaches he didn't want to be "pin-holed as just a musical theatre singer" but embraced the genre's sense of dramatics, which he clearly embraces in his personal sense of style.

So swept up in examining his ink up close, Garwood was back in the green room celebrating with his proud parents (his dad in tears) when the coaches realised they had forgotten to ask his name.

Martin ran back stage to get to know his final artist a little better, telling him: "I have spent hours, days, sitting in that chair waiting for your sound, waiting for that tone, waiting for your approach and I am really happy you're on my team."

While Madden play acted his interest in Garwood as he performed, during the actual tapings the Good Charlotte frontman had filled his team by that stage and could not have chosen the tattooed singer.

With only one night left to air of blind auditions, the competition is tightening up with only four of nine singers winning through to the battle rounds during Monday night's episode.

Sydney surfer girl Laura-Leigh Smith and Kiwi-born hip hop and musical theatre singer Courtney Hale both won places on Team Joel; while Melbourne electrician scored with Team Kylie.
